The smell of baked bread and laundry
The club
The bakery, the laundry room as well as the WC, and the showers were located behind the club. During the dam construction, bread was baked daily to feed the staff. Every two weeks the bed linen was washed and sterilized with a special steam generator. Occasionally, shoes that were found in the bed linen, were shrunk after the sterilization and looked like children’s shoes. After the dam was completed, the permanent residents of the settlement continued to use the laundry and the oven “…When the men went to work and the children to school, the women were waiting for the janitor, Kostas, to fire up the large stone oven in order to bake their daily food and make dessert“.
