The escape
The Pardo businesses
When the anti-Jewish measures were implemented, the family was forced to move to Evzonon Street, on the Exohes ghetto. On the eve of their move to the Baron Hirsch transit camp at the old train station, to be transported to a destination that was yet unknown to them, HaÏm and Eugenia decided to flee the ghetto with their three children, aged 5, 10 and 14 years old. "The danger was great, if they arrested us they would execute us and those who helped us (…) We hid in Thessaloniki in the house of our Christian compatriots, in the heart of the city near the German headquarters, protected by an Austrian", writes Haïm’s daughter, Rosina. They remained hidden for 547 days. "I was lucky to have been born into a wealthy Sephardic family that could afford to escape." The family was rescued, since their hideout, the residence of Dr. Karakotsios, at 113, Tsimiski Street, was never discovered. The building still stands to this day and Rosina was photographed in front of it 57 years later.
