Local peculiarities
Aigio
The coastal railway station of Aigio opened in 1887. An open-air coffee house and a restaurant (both demolished now) stood nearby, while taxis waited for the passengers outside the station. A little further on stood the carts that carried bulk goods downtown. The station of Aigio resembles the terminals of Corinth of Tripoli since it has a prominent central structure, but it is not as tall as the other buildings. This is a local peculiarity not found anywhere else in the Peloponnese railway network. The variety of architectural styles was the result of the construction of stations by competing companies in different periods. The government was indifferent to the stations’ appearance and failed to impose architectural uniformity. The station of Aigio closed in 2009.
