The Diakopto–Kalavryta railway opened two weeks before the Athens Olympics on March 10, 1896. The trains follow the narrow, steep, and rugged Vouraikos gorge. It is an imposing landscape with numerous small waterfalls and verdant mountain slopes. The original railway station of Zachlorou consisted of a single-storey edifice. Part of the building functioned as the residence of the stationmaster. The station was rebuilt after a fire in 1904. The ground floor served operational needs, while the first floor was reserved for the stationmaster and his family.
