The gateway of Thessaly
Larissa
The construction of the Larissa railway station was completed in July 1883, two years after the liberation of Thessaly from the Ottomans. A flood destroyed the railway line near the city and delayed its opening for several months. Finally, King George I of Greece inaugurated the station on April 23, 1884. He arrived by train from Volos to the sounds of a military band and cannon fire. The original station building was a beautiful neoclassical building with an elegant metal exterior decoration (similar to the Volos station). Since the road network of Thessaly was poor, the station became the main gateway for the trade of the Thessalian plain, with two daily trains to and from Volos. The building was demolished in 1957, except for the ground floor which serves as a warehouse.
