The first global torch relay
The first global torch relay
The journey of each Olympic Flame, the torch relay, begins from ancient Olympia in the spring, before the official opening of each Olympic Games, which takes place in the summer. The map of the torch relay shows the route of the flame, traveling for the first time to five of the planet’s continents. In order to explore the tactile map, please gently pull the tablet upwards until it is stable. The five continents are rendered in relief, in the color green, on the blue background of the oceans that surround them. Small dots indicate the cities which the flame passed through. An embossed black line connects the stops of the torch relay, indicating its course from one city to another, starting from Athens. The journey of the Olympic Flame began on the 25th of March 2004. Within 78 days, 11,500 torchbearers had traveled 78,000 kilometers in Greece and abroad. The flame shines its light on Africa and Latin America for the first time, and after passing through 177 Greek towns and cities, it triumphally enters the Olympic Stadium of Athens at 20.30 on the night of the 13th of August. After finishing the tactile exploration of the map, please return the tablet to its original vertical position. Later, you can listen to more information on the parade of the Opening Ceremony and the Centaur Costume.
