Events and Athletes
Moving towards the exit of the museum, we come through an impressive section with towering columns dispersed around the space dedicated to Sports and Athletes. Each column is a showcase, hosting either screens projecting snapshots of individual events or uniforms and equipment belonging to Greek Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Some of the objects are suspended in the middle of each showcase, while others are hanging on the walls or free-standing. Among them we find the sail from Nikos Kaklamanakis’ windsurfing board, the main sail from Sophia Bekatorou’s sailboat, and Panos Triantafyllou’s fencing glove. In the background, an entire wall bears the names of the medalists who have represented Greece in Olympic and Paralympic Games from their revival in 1896 until today. Also, in the area to the right of the entrance there is a showcase with balls from Olympic sports which you can explore by touch. As we exit this section, on the left there is a circular space in which a video is being projected with images of athletes from all over the world and snapshots from their participation at the Olympic Games. The video focuses on the triad “Body – Will – Mind”, recording personal moments of the athletes, capturing their desire, decisiveness and transcendence when they exceed their limits.
