The position of women in modern society and how that is shaped within a male dominated social and artistic environment has a central position in the work of distinguished visual artist Lynda Benglis (b.1941). Benglis has created some of the most important and provocative images of 20th century art. “Drawing” (1988), from the 1st Art Symposium (1988), was created from metal objects which the artist found and welded together in a creative and coincidental manner, creating a design against the background of the sky and the surrounding space. This composition revives Benglis’s Mediterranean roots, originating from Kastelorizo, and creates references to familiar Greek residential images, as well as the everyday life of women at home. The artist creates thus a feminist work which constitutes a record of its own creation process at the same time.
