Death and madness
To cure and to kill
The ancient Greeks did not approve of women drinking wine. The drinking of akraton ("unmixed”) wine was thought likely to lead to madness and death. Aelian mentions that the wine from Heraia in Arcadia rendered men foolish but women fertile; conversely, Achaean wine was thought to induce abortion. Sparta was the only Greek city where women routinely drank wine.
