The Gotzmann family came to Halberstadt in the late 1920s, where Benjamin Gotzmann, a men’s tailor, opened a store at Lichtengraben No. 14. His son Benno, who died in London in 2020, recalled that his father was considered to be the best tailor for uniforms and his business benefited from the fact that Halberstadt was a garrison town. For observant Jews, Benjamin Gotzmann was important because he guaranteed tailor-made clothing in accordance with the prohibition on shatnez. This is derived from the Torah (Leviticus 19:19 and Deuteronomy 22:11) and states that wool and linen may not be processed together.
