The Reformation artist
New Art for New Ideas
Cranach was a master painter who became wealthy defining the art of his times. He was well acquainted with the reformer, for Cranach served as Luther's matchmaker when he was courting Katharina von Bora. He made illustrations for Luther’s Bible and sermons. He painted numerous pictures and altarpieces supporting Protestant viewpoints. He supplied works of art to the court of Saxony and the open market. His workshop painted castles, the facades of houses, towers, and gates. It framed silk embroidery, supplied curtains, and painted tables and chests, and provided designs for glaziers, carpet weavers, lamp makers and goldsmiths.
