The mansion
Metaxas Mansion
The Metaxas mansion was designed by the Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller and was built in 1897-1899. It is adorned with statues of Herakleids on the two main facades and Caryatids on the side facing Louka Ralli Street. The first owner was Spyridon Metaxas, founder of the Metaxa distillation facility. His coat of arms now adorns the railing. Later on the house was passed down to his son, Aggelos. In the mid-20th century it accommodated the Anaxagoras Merchant Marine Schools of Naval Mechanics and Electricians. In 1976 it housed a private kindergarten. Following many decades of abandonment, it was restored to its former glory by a clothing business group.
