Important but puzzling
Oratorio dei Filippini–exterior
In 1637 Borromini was commissioned to build the Oratorio dei Filippini (Oratory of S. Filippo Neri), an important project that came with countless challenges. The available space was limited, there were multiple uses envisioned for the building, and Borromini had to proceed from the pre-existing plans of Maruscelli without effecting significant changes. This went on for 13 years, until Virgilio Spada, recognizing the architect’s genius, succeeded in granting him more freedom of action. The final result is a hybrid that combines traditional elements with the architecture of palazzi. It served as an oratory, a residence for monks, a library and a recreation chamber.
