Prince of Goulades
Goula castle - Mavrovouni
The castle was built by Tzannis Gregorakis, third bey of Mani (a sort of autonomous ruler under the authority of the Ottoman sultan) during his rule (1782-1798), when Gythio became the regional capital. The location of the fort with its circular towers (or goulades) was chosen so that the bey would be able to see his great achievement: the city he created.
