De Nointel’s profile (1635-1685)
Athens of 1674
De Nointel was a typical representative of Louis XIV and a typical man of the Baroque period. Always in the spirit of an aristocrat, he wants to imitate the luxury and prestige of a monarch. For this reason, accompanying him looks like a cavalcade: his steps are slow and imposing. He looks impressive, he appears with theatrical solemnity and he is an art lover. His great love for trips and tours stems from his restless mind. For five out of his nine years of being an ambassador to Istanbul, he travels to the Greek regions and Palestine. He is particularly interested in antiquities. He grabs or buys works of art and Greek manuscripts, either for his personal collection or on behalf of Louis XIV and his Minister of Finance. At the same time, he gathers any kind of information: geographical, archaeological, financial, commercial, folk. That’s why during his tours he wants to be surrounded by experts and educated people. He always has relative books with him, while his entourage includes two painters for the designing verification of all the remarkable cases.
