Fortezza - inside
The Fortezza rises on a hill called Palaiokastro, on the site of the ancient and Byzantine acropolis. The Venetians turned the sacred ancient site into a military center, with the addition of the Roman Catholic bishopric of Saint Nicholas. After the Turkish conquest of 1646 a residential area developed in this place until the end of the 19th century. There was living room for approximately 160 families. After its destruction in the Second World War, restoration work began in the 1960s and is still ongoing. Today the visitor can see a spacious complex with an open-air theater that was added in 1986 and beautiful views of the city, the port, and the sea.
