The Stronghold of Torture
ARKIVET
At the Arkivet, ‘intensified interrogation’ was carried out on prisoners. Today we call this type of interrogation ‘torture.’ Many feared this place, calling it ‘The House of Horrors’ or ‘The Stronghold of Torture.’ The reason is that tortured victims told about what they had experienced there and because passersby could hear the screams coming from this building. One of the more central whistleblowers in Southern Norway was Ole Wehus. Wehus was a state police officer and worked at the Arkivet as a civil servant from 1942. Most of the people who worked for the state police (Stapo) were also members of Quisling’s National Assembly (NS) Wehus took part in several torture interrogations and was known for being particularly brutal. When the war ended, Wehus was the only Norwegian from Southern Norway sentenced to death. He was killed by firing squad at Akershus Fortress in Oslo in 1947.
