The origins of the Old Town Hall
Old Town Hall (San Giacomo Theatre)
The most formal part of Venetian Corfu is found in Dimarchiou Square. The grand standalone building that dominates the square is the Old Town Hall, after which the square is named. But it has a much nobler past. Built by the Venetians in 1691, it originally functioned as a "Loggia di Nobili", where local nobles and politicians gathered to exchange views and discuss local issues. It was constructed entirely of stone from the village of Sinies, in northern Corfu, and remains one of the island’s architectural gems. It has a Renaissance style and is decorated with arches and exterior Baroque sculptures that include the bust of the Venetian admiral, Francesco Morosini, who was appointed to liberate the Aegean from the Turks.
