Corfu’s Byzantine iconography
The Antivouniotissa Museum
The museum highlights the role that the island played in the development of Greek ecclesiastical painting, especially after 1664 when many Cretan painters arrived in Corfu, either to settle here or on their way to Venice. Through the 90 beautiful icons, you will learn how the traditional Byzantine painting of the Ionian Islands (an art form that was preserved even when Corfu and other neighbouring islands came under Venetian rule) was influenced by Cretan artists and Western currents, helping create the Heptanese School of painting.
