A coal is recounting
Old Retorts (Stop 3-4)
“There were a lot of us in this journey. It was tiring but the experiences of a lifetime I have gained as well as a bunch of new friends were priceless. We crossed the whole Europe by train, until we ended up here, to a tall, dark and hot building. Suddenly, I felt the ground shaking; I closed my eyes and then the ground got lost under my feet. When I opened them again, I was in a very hot place, the hours felt like centuries and nothing was the same…”
“We were so packed into one another, that every once in a while we were losing some dust. We crossed Europe in a wagon like that until we arrived at a very tall building. Suddenly, we were emptied out on a retort when we started feeling hotter and hotter until I couldn’t take it anymore and surrendered to the heat and flames.”
The coal was heated in the retorts at 1000° C, without oxygen for 5 hours. The coal gas, which was used for the lighting and energy of the city, was the result of the coal’s distillation.
