Did you know that the Gasworks’ chimneys were 34 meters high?
Each of the retorts buildings had its own chimney, from which the exhaustion gas was released. According to the technical expertise of that time, the height of the chimneys was relevant to the amount of gas that was to be released to the atmosphere (the higher the chimney, the less the burdening of the atmosphere). That is why all three of them were designed to be between 30-34 meters high. As one can imagine though, the factory was heavily polluting leading to its shutting down in 1984.
