Tunnel + Montjuic Castle
Tunnel + Montjuic Castle
We will soon be going through a tunnel. For safety reasons we ask the passengers on the upper deck of the bus to remain seated until we have passed through the tunnel. Thank you. The top of this hill has been the site of several fortifications, the latest of which, the Castle of Montjuïc, remains today. A mention of a watchtower built on the site as a lookout post for enemy ships, dates way back to 1073. The current fortress largely dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century additions. However, the castle has a dark and often barbaric past, and it has not always defended the city it overlooks. The castle was used by the British to bombard the city in the War of Succession in 1705. Then in 1842, the garrison (loyal to the Madrid government) shelled the city from the castle to supress local Catalan insurrectionists - a new role that it would exercise for the next 50 years. It then served as a prison - holding, torturing and executing political prisoners, until the middle of the 20th Century. The former president of the Catalan Government, Lluís Companys was executed there in 1940. The stadium in the Olympic Park is named after him.
