Today the MNAC has the finest collection in the world of Romanesque art from the 11th to 13th centuries. The Gothic collection here covers the period from the late 13th century on to the 15th Century. The later Renaissance and Baroque periods are also represented with fabulous works. Eventually the remit of keeping things local was expanded from just Catalan works to works from the rest of Spain, Italy and latter-day Flanders.
There is now a modern art collection, covering Catalan works from the early 19th Century to the 1940s. It covers neoclassicism, the romantic and realism movements through modernism through to works of a more avant-garde nature, including Picasso.
