Beside the so-called "gymnasium" stands a square stone monument. It was once roofed with stone slabs and contains an internal domed chamber, but has no visible entrance or doorway. Its form resembles that of a tomb, although it may instead have been a memorial monument, or heroon – a hero shrine dedicated to a revered figure associated with the ancient origins of Butrint, such as Aeneas or Helenus.
