The long walls
The ancient Limnaia
Ancient Limnaia expanded considerably during the Hellenistic period. The town consisted of the acropolis and the main settlement, that occupied the side of the hill descending towards the sea. This part of the city is now covered by the buildings of Amfilochia. Limnaia was protected by the long walls that survive to the present day. It is possible there was also a suburb near the water, as well as docking facilities. The walls were reinforced with rectangular towers at regular intervals; three of them are still visible to the right of the modern entrance to the site, while to the left we can see the foundations of two square towers that marked the original entrance. A long track inside the walls connected this gate to the harbour.
