200 priests
Church of St.Theodora
Theodora’s tomb became a site of pilgrimage as many miracles were attributed to her. It incorporates a marble slab depicting Theodora and a small figure (possibly her son, Nikephoros). When the Ottoman explorer Evliya Çelebi visited Arta in the 17th century, he commented on the wealth of the church. The local authorities received a special tax to protect it, and there were 200 priests there serving the poor. The church is a three-aisled basilica, dating to the 12th century. Theodora added the triangular pediments at both ends, and the narthex (where her tomb is). The external portico was added in the late 13th century and, initially, extended on all sides of the church.
