The holy mountain
Kryoneri
Varasova is a limestone mountain with an elevation of 914 m. and steep cliffs that make it a popular climbing and paragliding destination. The name may be of Slavic origin and means “place of copper” or “the place where strong air hits”. Since the 9th century Varasova has attracted many monks and ascetics who established more than 72 churches, monasteries, and hermitages on its slopes and caves. Varasova became known as the “Holy Mountain” or the “Athos of Western Greece”, a clear reference to the famous centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism in the peninsula of Mount Athos. The mountain was also frequented by Titormus, a legendary shepherd who won a wrestling match again the most successful wrestler of the ancient Olympics, Milo of Croton.
