Bekir the Gambler
Fortress of St. Andreas
Every now and then, in the fortress of Saint Andrew, there is a stone relief to alleviate the monotony of the rubble stones with its inscriptions and images. A man with his hands raised threatens a scared animal; another man wears a traditional costume of Epirus and is about to kill a deer; a monstrous animal suffers in silence tethered to a cypress tree. In one of these reliefs we can clearly read the following inscription: “CASTLE SUPERVISOR IS BEKIR THE GAMBLER”. This stone relief commemorates the name of the castle commander at the time of Ali Pasha of Ioannina. It also preserves his nickname, probably earned as a result of his passion for playing cards. This is not the first time Bekir appears in our history books. In 1803 he led the men of Ali Pasha against Zalongo.
