Zongolopoulos started his career by sculpting busts, but by the 1950s his art had become all the more abstract. It was the time when he started experimenting with large scale sculptures. A cobbler working on the streets of Psychiko, Athens, triggered the artist’s need to revisit the anthropocentric sculptures. The cobbler posed for only three days and the first plaster model was created in 1954. The bronze cast statue of Alexandros was ready much later, in 1968. There are only two bronze editions of Alexandros today, one at the Museum of Contemporary Art established by Basil and Elise Goulandris on the Cycladic island of Andros, and another one at the Open Air Glyptotheque of Psychiko, George Zongolopoulos Square, Athens.
