The Temple of Afea
Afea, 1966
The porous-rock temple on the island of Aegina was built circa 500-490 BC, after the Doric temple standing on the same site and with the same orientation, initially built circa 570-560 BC, was destroyed by fire around 510 BC. Prosperity for the new Temple of Afea was not meant to last, however, following the Athenian domination of Aegina from the middle of 5th century BC. Gradual decadence left the area completely abandoned by the end of 2nd century BC.
