Background information
Five Circles, 2001
The proposal included a sculptural composition of a circle enclosing a smaller hexagon, which enclosed a pentagon with water jets forming a diagonal arc. The water sculpture was springing towards a liquid wall and a liquid 18m column. The composition also included the stainless steel sculpture Poseidon. The project was inaugurated in 1960, but Poseidon was never installed there.
Omonoia Square has been remodeled quite a few times ever since. Its final remodeling, as part of the Master Plan for the Unification of the Archaeological Sites of Athens in 2001, included Zongolopoulos’ hydrokinetic sculptural composition Five Circles.
