The Wise Emperor
Imperial Gate: Mosaic of Emperor Leon VI
Located on the imperial gate, the mosaic of Leo VI dates back to the 9th century. It depicts Emperor Leo VI paying homage to Jesus Christ, who is shown enthroned with two roundels with the Virgin Mary and Gabriel on both sides. Christ holds a text quoting “Peace be upon you. I am the light of the world’’. The kneeling Emperor, who reigned from 886 to 912 acquired posthumously and, possibly, during his lifetime the epithet “Wise” owing to his erudition and literary activity.
