The Moon’s South Pole
We will now fly south toward the Moon’s South Pole-Aitken Basin. Somewhat smaller than Oceanus Procellarum, this 2,500km crater is 13km deep, and unlike the two previous basins we visited, it’s not filled with spans of lava. The crash that dug this vast basin early in the Moon’s history may have changed its rotation to make this crater and a new rotation axis share a spot. Watch out for the mountains filling the horizon to let us know we’re close and consider how strange it is that human eyes haven’t so far looked directly into the crater, despite these mountains being imaged by the Apollo 8 crew.
